Maina Njenga History as the leader of Mungiki Sect.
He claimed a dove perched on his head 3 times while in class anointing him a prophet with the new name Maina Njenga. When he went home he shared the cultural light of worship with his cousin Ndura Waruinge who became his first follower & later co-leader of MUNGIKI.
After school, the 2 cousins spread the gospel of MUNGIKI in Laikipia & surprisingly Kikuyu youths joined the caravan in droves. They followed Maina Njenga as their spiritual leader. Who later raised a flag reppin Mungiki official colors ( Red,Green,White) at their Karindi home making it the official Mungiki HQs..
Maina later moved to Nairobi where he joined Tent of Living God church – an established similar religious sect. There he staged a coup & overthrew the leader Ngonya wa Gakonya taking up his followers under MUNGIKI wing.
The new members increased his flock by thousands & it is then Maina decided to imprint loyalty in their DNA. He started administering oaths of secrecy & baptizing them with water & fire. And later advised them to abstain from alcohol, weed & adultery.
He instead told them to use Tobacco as he organized them into troops for his new plan. The plan was to change their broke lives by joining politics as machinery for hire. Slowly, he started holding campaigns & rallies for his Kikuyu political friends for pay.
And his effectiveness came with gifts like a car from the president who later allowed Maina to help solve problems in the rising Matatus Industry. This go ahead made Maina create a clear leadership structure which turned the religious sect to an organized crime syndicate of brutal extortionists. Maina was the Boss with 2 underbosses. Charles Wagacha & Waithaka Wagacha.
Now set with a clear structure, they hit bus stops in Nrb forcing each very matatu to pay Ksh 200 to Mungiki boys for protection fees. Those who refused were left with death. Overtime, the police tried to deal with them by ambushing them in their meetings after realizing the monster that they had become to the society. But the fearless goons retaliated
However on 3rd March 2002, the intimidation forced the community of Kariobangi to react by lynching two members. An action that Mungiki responded by hacking to death 20 people mercilessly. These senseless murders led the Police Commissioner Philemon Abongo to announce the ban of the sect and crackdown on its leaders & members in 2002. First leader to be arrested was Ndura Waruinge & surprisingly a KANU MP David Mwenje was arrested too opening the lid on the role of politicians in bankrolling the organization.
